Catalyzed loading of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHC)

Storage and transport of hydrogen is gaining importance due to the increasing significance of H2 as a secondary energy carrier. However, these processes are challenging because hydrogen is flammable, has a high diffusivity and causes the embrittlement of metals. The LOHC technology avoids these problems: Hydrogen is bonded to the organic liquid in a catalyzed hydrogenation. Afterwards, the loaded LOHC can safely be transported with the existing infrastructure and stored for a long time. As soon as needed, H2 is released by a dehydrogenation and the LOHC material can be reused.

Climate-friendly production of hydrogen can be performed by water-electrolysis, for example by using surplus power from renewable energies (Power-to-X). This surplus arises from the deviation in times and areas of renewable energy production and energy demand. High energy harvest occurs when the sun is shining or the wind blows, but dark doldrums lead to shortage.
