Research

Besides efficient catalytic transformation, product purification and separation can become a bottleneck for renewable feedstock-based value chains. The separation and purification steps account for about half of the product costs in current petroleum refineries, and an even higher percentage is estimated for biorefineries. Due to the changed product properties, e.g. low thermal stability or high boiling points, there is a need for novel energy- and material-efficient separation processes. The aim of my work is to develop functional polymer materials for the adsorption of biomass-based substrates. The focus is mainly on the use of the principle of molecular recognition, through which a high complementarity between material and substrate is generated.

Research focus

  • The design and synthesis of new adsorption materials.
  • Various adsorption, desorption and recycling tests in batch systems.
  • The testing of the materials in continuous column setups.
  • The application of the adsorption materials within the Fuel Science Centre (FSC).
  • The analysis of the materials via N2-physisorption, CHN, pXRD, 1D/2D solid state MAS-NMR.
  • The elucidation of the adsorption mechanisms at the molecular level.

If you are interested in a research project with a focus on synthesis and adsorption, just send me an email! The topic fits especially for students with the majors SYN/CAT.
