My research deals with the electrochemical upgrading of biogenic acids to produce pyrrolidones, which are important intermediates for pharmaceutical products, materials or solvents. Due to climate change, mankind is in a phase of change. On the one hand, chemical manufacturing processes based on renewable resources, such as biomass, are in the spotlight; on the other hand, the energy transition has triggered a switch to renewable energy sources, such as wind and solar power. However, the use of these energy sources makes it difficult to provide thermal energy, which is often needed for chemical biorefinery processes. In addition, there is a lack of high-potential storage technologies in the renewable energy sector. In this context, the coupled production, storage and use of electricity and the associated simultaneous production of usable biobased pharmaceuticals or solvents offer an economically and ecologically highly attractive solution.
In this context, my research project on the production of various biogenic pyrrolidones focuses on the electrochemical conversion of readily accessible biogenic carboxylic acids.
