Integrated Carbon Capture & Conversion – ICCC

Carbon-based energy sources P2O5changed our world. Since the early 19th century, they have been the foundation of industrial development that has helped billions of people rise from poverty to better living standards. However, such leaps in development have been realized at the cost of massive greenhouse gas emissions with known consequences for the global climate.

The limitation or reduction of CO2 emissions as well as the use of CO2 as an available, cheap C1 raw material are therefore essential tasks with extraordinary ecological and economic potential. Integrated Carbon Capture & Conversion (ICCC) is an elegant and efficient process for integrated CO2-adsorption and subsequent conversion to valuable chemical products. One promising use of CO2 as a C1 source is the catalytic hydrogenation to alcohols, which are already used as sustainable platform chemicals, fuel additives or potential H2-storage molecules. If green hydrogen is used for the hydrogenation, the ICCC process offers unparalleled features: (I) CO2-emission reduction by converting the pollutant to chemical value products and (II) chemical storage of electrical energy in the form of green hydrogen. Bifunctional heterogeneous catalysts are promising materials to achieve this goal.
