Research

Topic:

Development of Copper-based Water-Gas Shift catalysts for automotive exhaust gas treatment

Motivation:

A large part of the emissions responsible for climate change are produced by the transport sector. Especially the Nitrogen oxide emissions of diesel engines are the subject of recent discussions. Even though the transfer to more sustainable technologies for passenger transportation is foreseeable in the long term, diesel engines will still be the most used prime mover for commercial vehicles and freight carriage. This makes the development of novel technologies for the further utilization of diesel engines a necessity. A combination of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with a lean NOx trap (LNT) has been proposed for this purpose. However, the efficient utilization of such a novel system also requires the development of more efficient catalysts.

Research focus:

  • Synthesis of mixed oxides as heterogeneous catalysts materials
  • Characterization of the materials though different analytical methods (E.g. XRD, TPR, BET and more)
  • Activity-tests of the catalysts in a continuous flow setup
  • Investigation of the structure activity relationship
