Overview on Research

Isabel Sommerfeld's research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of enzyme-regulated, self-regenerating microgels and adaptive hydrogel coatings. For this purpose, specific enzymes are immobilized into microgels using various methods, so that the addition of an enzyme substrate enables the formation of a polysaccharide shell. Once the layer is sufficiently thick, it can no longer grow because the diffusion of the enzyme substrate to the enzyme is prevented. If the shell is damaged, the diffusion is reactivated and the polysaccharide shell is regenerated.

Research focus

  • Synthesis and characterization of responsive microgels with immobilized enzymes
  • Design of regenerative soft materials
