The homogeneously catalysed, large-scale production of fine chemicals offers great potential, but it becomes even more exciting when the whole thing is to happen asymmetrically. This is where my research comes in to play, as I work on the synthesis of chiral phosphine-phosphoramidite ligands and use them in asymmetric rhodium-catalysed hydroformylation and hydrogenation. NMR spectroscopy and chiral GC/HPLC are indispensable characterisation methods for my ligands and catalysis products.
How versatile the possibilities are also with regard to the use of chiral products is made clear by our recently published paper.
